A Misleading Name
Don’t be put off by the name. In fact, York heat pumps work to both heat your home in winter and to cool it in summer. This is possible because heat pumps move heat both ways. In the winter, they extract heat from outdoor air and direct it into your home. Many heat pumps also have additional heating elements to add even more heat to the air entering your home.
In the summer, however, heat pumps simply move heat in the opposite direction. They take the warmth out of your house, helping you to stay cool and comfortable on even the hottest summer days.
The Whole Setup
York heat pumps are remarkable pieces of equipment, but they don’t usually work alone. In fact, for a whole house climate control system, you’ll want to have several different components in place. The heat pump is the outdoor component of this system, and it brings in or draws out the warmer air.
Inside, you’ll have either an air handler or furnace designed to manage the distribution of the heated or cooled air throughout the ductwork in your home. This indoor component works in tandem with the heat pump to ensure a thorough and even distribution of temperature controlled air.

Because heat pumps take care of both heating and cooling your home, there are actually two energy efficiency ratings associated with each of them. York heat pumps have a SEER rating, which relates to how well they cool the air, as well as an HSPF rating reflecting their heating efficiency. Ideal units will rate highly in both of these categories.
