Ductless Splits FAQs
What Are Ductless Splits and Minis-Splits?
Ductless split and mini-split systems are home heating and cooling options for homes where space is limited or ductwork doesn’t exist and isn’t an option. They are comprised of one outdoor unit and one or more indoor units. The indoor unit takes air from the room and cools or heats it after being supplied with the heating element from the outdoor unit. The indoor unit then sends the comfort control air back in to the room.
These relatively new types of home comfort systems come in a variety of sizes and types so it can help to explore options with a trained professional before making any final decisions.
Can Ductless Splits Really Control Temperatures Multiple Rooms or Areas?
There are a number of different types and sizes of ductless split and mini-split AC and heater systems. Larger split systems are great for larger rooms or sections of a home, but for individualized temperature control in specific rooms, mini-split systems are generally the way to go. A mini-split system allows you to install up to 8 individual indoor units as part of a single system.
With ductless splits it’s easy to find a model that will suit your needs because they offer such flexibility and the number of options available continues to grow. Even if you do opt for multiple indoor units, it’s often not as expensive as you’d think, because depending on the size, multiple indoor units can run off of a singular outdoor unit.
Why Should I Consider Ductless Split Systems Over Others?
Many existing homes don’t have ductwork installed, and because they don’t, they aren’t laid out in a way that’s conducive to adding them, so air conditioning systems that don’t require ducts are often the only choice. Even if a home without ducts could have them added, it’s often a very expensive project that disrupts your daily life.
Ductless split and mini-split systems offer the same home comfort you get with central heating and air conditioning, without expensive ductwork being installed. These units take up very little space and the installation is quick and easy. Maintenance is easier with ductless systems as well because with ductwork you have to constantly keep up with duct cleaning, sealing and repair.
Ductless splits are also usually more energy efficient than central heating and air systems, which means your monthly energy bills will be lower. You’ll also use less energy in general because each indoor unit has its own thermostat, allowing you to only heat and cool the rooms being occupied at a particular time.
